Design for user experience

Incorporating user experience design

User experience (UX) is critical to application adoption. Application adoption is critical to achieving the anticipated benefits of the application. Teams that focus on UX from the start are more likely to enjoy the success and adoption of the applications they build. Teams that ignore UX or only consider it towards the end of development are more likely to build applications that end users find frustrating or ignore altogether.

Teams that focus on actual users achieve better results. Teams might assume that they can achieve a good UX by designing without the involvement of end users and user experience designers. However, the users and the project team often have different strengths, challenges, goals, and expectations. These differences are the key reasons that a project team-focused approach fails, while an approach focused on users and UX design achieves results.

As a business architect, take the following steps to help your team:

  1. Verify that your team has a plan for incorporating UX design.
  2. Verify that a UX designer is included early in the project.
  3. Verify that users are involved in activities like user research and user testing.
  4. Work closely with the designers on your team to align your activities and deliverables.
Tip: If you are on a project without incorporated UX design, consider raising the lack of UX design as a project risk. Work with your team to quantify the risk posed to your project and create a strategy to address the risk.
