Pega design systems and UX architecture

Pega's digital experience technology

The Pega total UX offering consists of two design systems: Constellation and Theme Cosmos. Each design system is authored in a different way and has a different level of prescriptiveness.

Theme Cosmos (traditional Pega section-based UI, 8.7 and prior)

In this type of UI architecture, Theme Cosmos allows application developers to change UI sections by forking code. Sections are Pega rules configured by developers in Dev Studio. Think of section rules like a canvas where developers drag UI elements, and then apply business logic and data to assign meaning. Developers can place visual elements flexibly, but to extend elements, developers must fork code. Forking is when a developer changes a section rule and saves it as a new section rule, which modifies the code and the UI.

Constellation (Pega's new view-based architecture, 8.8— previously known as Cosmos React in 8.7)

Constellation allows application developers to configure views, not sections. By doing so, low-code and citizen developers can manipulate data, and consequently its presentation, much faster. With view-based architecture, the focus is on the business outcomes and user goals—the user interface and experience is pre-developed and only requires configuration.
