Preparation for designing in Constellation

Before you start designing with Constellation, it is important that you first understand the workflow, user needs, and intended use of your application. Once this is done, you are ready to work with a Pega Certified Lead System Architect (LSA) to review the Pega Constellation design system and create a basic application and case structure.

Prepare your design tools

Figma and Sketch

Pega provides extensive Constellation Figma and Sketch libraries. You can subscribe to library updates directly from design.pega.com (a resource for designers and developers to learn about the design system and its patterns and components), or download library items for use in another design app.

Use Constellation symbols, layer styles, color variables, and text styles whenever possible. Otherwise, if you detach from symbols, you will not receive improvements and bug fixes.

Adobe XD (Mac & Windows), Icons8 Lunacy (Windows)

The Constellation design system library is currently designed for Figma and Sketch and does not offer native support for third-party applications. You can still manually download and manipulate files, but automatic scaling, font families, and so on, may work differently.

Additionally, due to the limitations of Adobe XD and Lunacy, there is no native method to keep designs in sync with the latest release within these platforms.

Design kit categories and templates

The Constellation design kit libraries are divided into categories. These categories generally match the current component structure of the design.pega.com site, which makes finding and working with the components simple. Once you are ready to begin designing, start with the appropriate page template found in the page templates category.

Live prototyping

If you or your team do not need any brand-new layouts or patterns and you have a strong working knowledge of Pega’s citizen developer process, you can prototype in App Studio and test your solutions with users.
